Making Characters Memorable
This exploration of character creation sets the stage for the next section, where we delve into the techniques for making characters memorable. In order for a character to truly leave a lasting impression on readers, they must possess certain qualities that make them unique, relatable, and captivating. It is not enough for a character to simply exist within the pages of a story; they must possess a certain spark that sets them apart from the rest.
One of the key aspects of making a character memorable is giving them a distinct voice. This goes beyond just the way they speak, but also encompasses their thoughts, beliefs, and worldview. A character with a strong voice has the ability to captivate readers and draw them into their world. Whether it's through witty banter, profound insights, or emotional vulnerability, a character's voice is what lingers in the minds of readers long after they've turned the last page.
Another important element in creating memorable characters is giving them flaws and vulnerabilities. Perfect characters can be boring and unrelatable; it is their imperfections that make them human and endearing. By allowing characters to struggle, make mistakes, and confront their own shortcomings, authors create opportunities for growth and transformation. Readers connect with characters who face adversity and overcome it, as it reflects the struggles and triumphs we experience in our own lives.
Additionally, the relationships a character forms can greatly contribute to their memorability. Whether it's a complicated love interest, a loyal sidekick, or a fierce rival, the dynamics between characters can add depth and complexity to their individual journeys. The bonds they form and the conflicts they navigate create opportunities for character development and emotional resonance. By crafting genuine and compelling relationships, authors breathe life into their characters, making them feel like real people with whom readers can form a lasting connection.
In the next section, we will explore how imbuing a character with movement and action can further enhance their memorability, bringing them to life in the minds of readers. Through vivid descriptions, dynamic gestures, and powerful actions, authors can create characters that jump off the pages and into the imaginations of those who encounter them.
After I talked my illustrator, this is the first sketch I got. She had colour, but not the vivid colours that I had described. And she was too static. There was an added complication as I was not talking directly with the illustrator. My editor was an intermediary between me and the illustrator. I was never very comfortable with it, but these were the conditions I was offered and at this point I really did not think, I was going to work with this particular illustrator, but I gave her something else to work with for one more attempt, before making a decision.
